What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session? The Honest Answer

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session? The Honest Answer

If you have been thinking about hypnotherapy but keep not booking, I already know why. It is almost never the money and almost never the time. It is the question underneath: what will happen to me in that room? Will I be unconscious? Will I say things I don't want to say? Will someone else be in control of my mind?

Those fears make complete sense — because most of what you have seen about hypnosis came from stage shows and movies. So let me do something simple: walk you through exactly what happens in a hypnotherapy session with me, from the moment you sit down (in my Coral Gables office or on Zoom) to the moment you leave. No mystery, no swinging watch.

It Starts With a Conversation, Not Hypnosis

The first part of every session is just the two of us talking. You tell me what prompted you to reach out — and together we get specific about how the issue is showing up in your life and what it is costing you. Not the label ("anxiety," "overeating," "can't sleep") but the real texture of it: the 2am scrolling, the snapping at people you love, the pantry visits you don't remember deciding to make.

This matters because the subconscious runs patterns, not labels. The more honestly we can describe the pattern, the more precisely we can work on it.

The Question That Stumps Almost Everyone

Then I ask a question that sounds easy and almost never is: "What do you want instead?"

Here is what I have learned from hundreds of sessions: most people can describe their problem in vivid detail, but when I ask what they want in its place, they answer with the absence of the problem. "I just don't want to feel anxious anymore." "I want to stop bingeing at night."

That is not a flaw in you — it is simply how long you have been living with the issue. But the subconscious cannot move toward a "not." It needs something positive and beneficial to replace the old pattern with — something that supports you. So we spend real time here, together, building a picture of what you are moving toward: waking up rested, eating dinner and feeling done, speaking up in the meeting. This picture becomes the raw material for the entire session.

Three Things I Tell Every First-Time Client

Before we ever begin hypnosis, I share three things with every new client.

1. You already go into hypnosis every day

Hypnosis is not an exotic state. You drop into it when you scroll on your phone and twenty minutes vanish, when you get absorbed in a book, when you drive home and don't remember the exit. It is a natural, familiar state of focused relaxation — I simply guide you into it on purpose.

2. It feels different for everyone — and you stay in control

Some clients feel like they gently fall into hypnosis. Others feel exactly the way they feel in conversation, just deeply relaxed — and are convinced "it isn't working" right up until the insights start arriving. Both are normal. And this is the part I want you to hear clearly: you are always in control. You only share what you want to share. You only accept suggestions that align with your values. You are aware of everything happening, and you will remember everything afterward. Hypnosis is not sleep — it is a relaxation of the nervous system. (If the movie version is still living in your head, I wrote about the biggest myths here.)

3. We are talking with the feeling mind

In session, we are speaking with your subconscious — the feeling mind, not the logical one. So your only job is to let answers bubble up naturally and say whatever comes, even if it feels like gibberish or nonsense. By the end of the session, it will all make sense. It always does.

Going Into Hypnosis (Easier Than You Think)

The induction itself is a guided process very similar to meditation — my voice, your breath, your attention settling. Many clients tell me it feels just like meditation, except faster. One client put it perfectly: reaching a meditative state on her own took several tries and real effort, but in session she feels deeply relaxed almost instantly. That is the advantage of being guided — you don't have to do the work of getting there alone.

Finding Where It Started

Now the real work begins. In Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) — the method I'm certified in, developed by Marisa Peer — we go back to where the issue started. We ask your subconscious to show us what caused it to begin doing what it's doing, and it answers: it brings up a few different moments from your life.

Then we look at those moments together, and I guide you to make connections. What did you start believing in those moments? Because those beliefs — formed years or decades ago, usually by a much younger you — have been quietly guiding your actions ever since.

The Part That Surprises People Most

Next, we ask the subconscious a question most people have never considered: what have you been trying to do for me all this time?

And the answer, every single time, is some version of: trying to help. The overeating was comfort. The anxiety was protection. The procrastination was keeping you safe from failing. Your subconscious has never been working against you — it has been running an outdated program on your behalf.

So we thank it. Sincerely. We acknowledge that it has been trying to help — and then we tell it the truth: that way of helping is not helping anymore. It is holding us back. And we show it a better way to help, one that actually supports the life you want now. Here is what I love most about this part: every one of those new choices is decided by you. Not by me. My job is to guide the conversation; the new direction is entirely yours.

Rewriting the Old Beliefs

We close the hypnosis portion with suggestion therapy: I speak directly to your subconscious and update every belief we uncovered during the session, replacing them with the new beliefs and habits you chose — stated as already true. Not "you will stop feeling anxious," but "you feel calm and safe." Not "you won't need food to cope," but "you nourish your body with foods that make you feel good." The subconscious responds to what is positive, present, and vivid — so that is exactly how we speak to it.

Coming Back — and the "Aha" Moments

Then I gently bring you back to your ordinary conscious awareness. No snapping, no disorientation — it feels like surfacing from deep rest. And we talk: what connections did you make? What were the biggest aha moments? This debrief is often where the session's meaning clicks into place. Those fragments that felt like nonsense an hour ago? This is when they assemble into a story that finally explains the pattern you have been fighting for years.

After Your Session: The 21 Days That Make It Stick

After our session, I record a personalized audio built from everything we discovered — your new beliefs, in the exact language your subconscious offered up — and send it to you within 24 hours. Your job is to listen to it every day for 21 days. I tell every client the same thing: this part is not optional, and here is why. The mind loves what is familiar. Your old pattern won because it was familiar. The recording makes your new beliefs familiar through repetition — and that is what makes the change lasting rather than a one-week glow.

You are not on your own afterward, either. We check in one week after your session, and again at three weeks. And after a first session, I prepare a plan for future sessions based on what actually showed up — because what surfaces in the room is often deeper and more interesting than what we booked the appointment for.

If you would rather build a daily hypnotherapy practice on your own first, that is exactly why I built Mochi Zen — RTT-based hypnotherapy audio sessions in an app, with a free 7-day trial.

What the Research Says

This structure — a guided session with a hypnotherapist, followed by weeks of repeated listening — is not just my preference. A 2019 meta-analysis of 22 randomized controlled trials published by the American Psychological Association found self-hypnosis produced medium-to-large clinical effects, and that it worked best when it began with a practitioner-guided session and was practiced repeatedly afterward. And in weight loss specifically, Kirsch, Montgomery & Sapirstein (1995) found people who added hypnotherapy lost more than twice the weight — results that held at the two-year follow-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose control during hypnosis?

No. You remain in control the entire time. You only share what you choose to share, and you only accept suggestions that align with your values. Hypnosis is a relaxation of the nervous system, not a surrender of your will.

What does hypnosis actually feel like?

It varies. Some people feel a gentle falling-into-relaxation; others feel completely ordinary, just calm — like a conversation with their eyes closed. Both work equally well.

Will I remember what happened in the session?

Yes. You are aware of everything during the session and remember everything afterward. Hypnosis is not sleep or unconsciousness.

What if I can't be hypnotized?

If you can get absorbed in your phone, a book, or a TV show, you can go into hypnosis — it is a natural state you already enter daily. Being guided into it is usually easier than meditating on your own.

What if I say something embarrassing?

You won't say anything you don't want to say. The subconscious offers up what is relevant to your healing, and you choose what to speak aloud.

How long is a session, and is it in person or online?

An RTT session with me runs about 90 minutes. I see clients in person in Miami and remotely over Zoom — the process and results are the same in both.

What happens after the session ends?

Within 24 hours of your session, you receive a personalized audio recording to listen to daily for 21 days, plus check-ins with me at one week and three weeks. After a first session, I also map out a plan for any future sessions based on what surfaced.

How many sessions will I need?

Many issues shift significantly in a single session; deeper or layered patterns may benefit from a series. After your first session, I'll recommend a plan based on what your subconscious actually revealed — not a one-size-fits-all package.
